I got to tell you I do mourn it. Everyone has bitched about the
"nonstandard" simm-32 being a scam to rip us off and that was not the
case. GVP engineers actually took up a simm already in use in such
platforms as Macintosh and NexT because it was faster. MOST of the
complaints center around their efforts to deliver the most advanced
products they could. They were trying to keep Amigas cutting edge.
The problem with that is of course that one can never be sure which method
will become the "VHS" of the pop culture years down the road. So the PC's
finally settled on the 4/16/32/64mb 72 pin simm as THE STANDARD; who could
know? They didn't get to that level until years after the GVP030 accel was
out. Even the 3001 used what was considered a FAST AT-IDE interface when
the IDE interface was still being hammered out. Of course the cheap PC
industry went mostly with the slower, now "standard" IDE.
I also cursed the GVP scsi controllers sometimes for their proprietary
ways and prefer to use ICD in my own machines, but I know the problems
were related to their attempt to deliver superior performance and using
technology that would not work with the old junk drives that most of us
buy at least some of the time. That was frequently our own fault.
I can't really pee on their grave for not having perfect service either, I
have not found any company who was that much more responsive. That is not
to say it's good, just that they are averagely bad. This is not Japan we
are living in here. The worst decision was to pull the GVP echo off
fidonet when they laid off the guys running it. That was where most users
went for help rather than CIS. Maybe they were trying to learn from CBM in
the end. 🙂 They made the mistake of trying to make a profit from the
Amiga, the unforgivable sin amongst it's users base.
