My suggestion for trees uses a slightly different approach. Create a 2d shape roughly corresponding to the outline geometry of the tree. Assign it and bring it into the 3d-editor. Do planar surface mapping onto this object, straight on. Now prepare your material with the texture map of the tree at say 80%, a white opacity map of the tree on a black 0,0,1 background at 100%. Use two-sided, decal, and phong. Put this material into your materials library. Go to the 3d-editor and choose that material, assign it to the object. Now do a local-axis rotate on the object and hold the SHIFT down to clone it. You now should have a reasonable 3d-tree. The geometry should look like a "+" from above. Let me know if it works out.
