James, Yep, it's getting a little old alright. You are *generally* pretty safe staying on the Westside of town, except maybe at the beach, Santa Monica (mainly just harassed by the panhandlers), or Westwood. Drive on into downtown, park at the Convention Center and go to the show. Otherwise, things are about as they are in most cities. I would suggest NOT staying downtown or spending your evenings there, though. I want to note that my opinions do not represent those of the Los Angeles Tourist Board (or whatever they are).
