Jeff,
You're certainly right in that respect. A "softer" picture can look
better than a razor sharp picture up to a point. Then it starts to look fuzzy.
Like you said, graininess and noise can stand out in a razor sharp
picture…but when softened can seem to blend into the overall picture.
