This is all just kibitz, of course. I had heard that the 5th head was for stills also, but from a questionable source. I wonder how it worked, mixed in the 2nd field of the frame maybe? I tend to believe the extra tape width story myself, based on the end results I observed. Optimizing the gaps improves the frequency response only. Increasing the the amount of magnetic media that's recorded improves the S/N ratio. I remember the 4-head vs. 2-head SP being cleaner more than anything else. It could also be the manufacturer's choice for that matter.
