Scott, I disagree on what rm would have to do, but you're right, that's not the point of this discussion. The point is that not being warned about deleting a directory is not a good argument for shell vs program expansion. There is nothing about program expansion that says the program has to warn the user either. That's entirely up to the programmer in either event. I personaly do not like it when a program asks me if I'm sure. I told the computer to do something, and it darn well should do it in my opinion. Because of that…I find your reasoning (so a program can warn you) to be of no value to me. Obviously that's a concern to you. But again, where the wildcard is expanded has nothing to do with whether a user is or isn't (should or shouldn't be) warned. My point all along is that it's consistent. The program only has to be written to accept 2 things….multiple input commands and re-directed input. Don
