I understand "The Bottom Line". But take OS-2 for example, In the first
year it was offered, the price was over $500, and by the end of the year
it's installed base was under 5000 WORLD WIDE! It didn't get any better.
And as BYTE (I think) magazine put it, was it better to sell 5000 copies at
$500 ? Or maybe IBM should have sold 50,000 copies at $50 ? True, 5,000
manuals is cheaper than 50,000, so the bottom line was showed a higher
profit. But because that first year was so poor, Microsoft dropped OS-2
support. Will OS-2 ever take off ? I doubt it. Could it have taken off if
it had undersold Windows from the start, even though it was a poor product
? Even money, but it's chances would have been better.
All I'm saying about the Amiga is CBM should do more. Sure the stock
holders (i.e: Irv Gould) are happy in the short term. But are they
reinvesting profits ? Apparently not as quickly as Compaq, Apple, Novell
and any other computer equipment manufacturer you can name. Eventually
this will catch up with CBM, and in the dog-eat-dog world of computers, all
the price slashing and all the advertising and all the R&D will come too
late. I hope CBM makes me eat my words, I really do.
