The answer to that question is really no. You can't make DPaint 4 work
fully with a hard disk and one meg. You need to have very close to the full
one megabyte of memory free in order to have animation menus unghosted and
useable.
The best advice would indeed be to get more memory. If you have a 2091
controller card or other controller card that supports additional memory,
then you can add more memory inexpensively.
Hard disk drivers, and hard disk partitions, along with PD utilities and
other hard disk startup considerations, eat bits of memory. It's likely
that this is what is happening.
