Phil – the DXF format is covered in Appendix C of the AutoCAD Reference
Manual. If you don't have an ARM, you can download the text as a file called
DXFDOC.EXE from Lib 1 "AutoCAD" of the ACAD Forum.
For another look at the format, check out "The AutoCAD Database Book" from
Ventana Press.
