Well, yes. You could get the Phillips for $10,000, but then you also get
three vendors to deal with instead of one (Phillips, whatever software
company, whatever hard drive supplier). My past experience says it's
better to support with a sole source than piece-mealing. Sixteen years in
the computer industry has taught me this. Besides, JVC's technical support
is FAR beyond any other vendor's I've dealt with. To me, as a mastering
facility, I don't have time to waste negotiating whose equipment fault it
is. That is the main reason I went with JVC gear. I don't need the
headaches just to save a few bucks. Now, if I were a small operation
looking to cut costs, the 2 or 3,000 dollar difference might persuade me,
but I doubt it, for if I were trying to grow a business and reputation
(which I have done, by the way), I wouldn't want my image tarnished as far
as delivery of product to my potential customers. Back to the same
lesson…. oh well, maybe I should write an article. Of course these
opinions are my own from my viewpoint as a write-once producer and
mastering facility manager.
