DOS Power users should keep fighting the switch to a PC based GUI until Microsoft, Apple, IBM, SUN or somebody else can offer a better alternative to the price & performance of DOS for Intel-based PCs. Experienced DOS users do not need a GUI to make it easier to use an operating System they already know how to use. AutoCAD Windows extension (probably the most approptiately named Windows program yet) is a prime expamle. Why would anyone who is an experienced AutoCAD for DOS user want to switch to Windows and take 50-75% decrease in performance? As for wether Windows is an operating system. As far as dedicated Windows users are concerned it is. For them DOS is a necessary evil. Unfortunately in the personal computer biz, perception is often more important than real technological excellence or reality. Windows is percieved by many inexperienced and uniformed PC users as being both a big imprvement on DOS and equal or superior to the Mac when it is niether. Windows NT may be another story? Let's hope Microsoft dows a better job with that than they did with 0S/2. Knowing Microsoft they will end up doing another fantastic job of marketing a technically inferior product.
