Ken,
I fail to see how you produce an actual surface in 3D Studio with
DXF polylines by using a scaning service. True, scaning the map is fast and
cheap but creating an actual model by hand from that data can be very
difficult.
If you do model construction which includes alot of interaction with
surfaces, then specilized surfacing software is worth it's weight in gold.
We can for example, select a set of entities which represent a complex wall
with windows and the software will create the wall as a surface with the
correct holes for the windows. Once the wall is created then you can drape
other entities on the wall to create signs, trim, vines or what ever. The
same applies for surfaces that represent roads or parking lots; you can
drape entities to represent stripping, skid marks, standing water. Even
complex entity constructions can be draped for placing fences, guard rails,
vehicles and even buildings.
Keith.
BTW, If you are located in Dallas then make time to vist the AutoDesk
Multimedia booth at the AEC show June 9-11. The very latest for 3DSr2 will
be on display.
