I like to look at modelers for raytracers as object modelers
not as scene generators. Usually a modeler will let you do both, but unless
your paying more than $100 for it, it's going to be an object modeler ( a lot
of features will be missing ). It's good to be able to visualize where the
objects should be positioned (roughly speaking). Wireframe make things go
faster at the expense of having to use a lot your imagination…anyways,
writing a scene file in an editor is the ultimate creativity developer.
Coming back to Dan Farmer's reply, it's good to bite the bullet and learn the
syntax.
It should save a lot of headaches later.
