Hi Harley,
Have you found that DOS base file viewer yet? If not, lend me you ear.
Although there are many utility programs that do file translations available
throughout CompuServ, if I had to TOOT any of them it would be LeadVIEW from
Lead Technologies. As well as providing translation between a good number of
formats, it also provides image compression capabilities that will make your
hard-drive gasp with relief.
I work as a Computer graphic designer and almost exclusively utilize the Targa
(TGA) format, which can result it some impressive image sizes. 15 to 25 Mbytes
is not uncommon! With leadVIEW I can `crunch' that down to between 5 and 10%
original size <honest!>. Speedwise, we're talking FAST! A 1 Mbyte 24bit TGA can
be `crunched' in under 5 seconds <I currently run a Compaq 386/25, DOS 5, QEMM
& 9.2Mb RAM>. With some of the more common utilites I've tried you could start
a translation, go for lunch, tour the zoo and do an oil change before anything
happens.
In short, I'm REALLY pleased with LeadVIEW <the best $90 I spent>. You can
reach Lead Technologies at (704)-549-5532, I'm sure they'd send you a trial
version of their software.
I hope this can be of help to you.
Cheers,..
