[Continued] The new motherboard made a major difference in the performance of the Mitsumi 002 drive. Rather than poke along in a sluggish manner, the Mitsumi sped up to the 150 KB/second standard and stayed there, according to the CDTA and MPC Wizard test programs: Wizard showed a 172 KB/second transfer rate. Where the video on the Sherlock Holmes II demo disc and sound clips on the Time Warner Desert Storm disc paused and broke up with the old motherboard, they ran smoothly and uninterrupted on the new motherboard, with the same drive. By the way, I've been using the Mitsumi 002 with the software transfer option instead of DMA transfer, since software transfer worked better on the old machine. I would have never guessed that switching motherboards would make such a dramatic difference for the Mitsumi. Instead of planning to replace the drive, I'm going to keep it for a while, at least until the double-speed drives drop to less than $200.
