David Kohn responded to me in EMAIL nad solved the mystery.
The NEC manual refers to switch positions 1-4 and says they are
"reserved" and should remain off….
Well, aparently not, in my case… switch 4 controls handshaking,
according Mr. Kohn, and once I set it ON, the drive appears to
work fine.
