You can play around with the blend settings – Other Options button – Smooth Edge Transparency – to get a close physical feather. Match this with Make Mask and a color variance setting and play with it in a separate buffer. Then restore the buffer to your main screen. Now with Photoshop and ImageFX, you can lasso an area and creep-in/out by color variance and a predefined amount of pixel creep. Since this is happening while you are watching the whole image, you can easily redo it and see the effect. Color variance is kinda weird to work with. I tried cutting out a black-shaded typeface on a black background. Well, as the type sorta fades into the black background, where does one set the variance? My type looked like Swiss cheese on the edges. Now one could have carefully used the freehand tool to cut around the type but I have a life to live, so…
