I prefer the Mac for writing both ISO9660 and Mac HFS CD's. I use
FWB's Hard Disk Toolkit software for formatting a 1-gig drive, and I
partition it "on-the-fly." By this I mean I create a partition about
20% larger than the data, arrange and optimize the data and then
shrink the partition to just slightly larger than the data. This is
necessary only for the Mac HFS CDs since with ISO9660 only the data
files are actually copied.
Most of the data arrives via our Ethernet network which transfers
about 15 Mb per minute. I publish the Mac drive via System 7 and
whoever is creating the data can copy it directly from their PC, with
an AppleTalk card, to the gig drive. I have also received DOS files
on SyQuest and Optical removables, which are mounted on the Mac with
Access PC software (an extension). You must remember, however, to
disable Access PC before making the CD with MacTopix because it
conflicts with the process.
It is suggested to make an image file before making a CD but I
usually don't bother and have had few problems. If you have more than
5000 or 6000 files for one CD-ROM, you will need to make an image
file before mastering.
