MPC SPEC
The May 17 announcement by Multimedia PC Marketing Council actually
marks two developments: (a) the Level 2 Specification for "enhanced"
multimedia computing, and (b) plans for converting the MPC trademark
to an MPC certification mark. Both appear to be welcome developments
that respond to concerns voiced in the literature and everywhere else.
The Level 2 Spec is backwardly compatible with the original Level 1
spec which remains in full effect. The Level 2 is a more capable
platform for "advanced" or "enhanced" multimedia, which they don't
really define very specifically but I guess translates into just
more/faster/better for those who can afford or need it. The basics
of this Level 2 are — 486, 4Mb RAM (8 recommended), 160Mb HD, double
spin, XA ready, multisession capable drive, 16 bit sound, and display
resolution of 640 x 480 with 65,536 colors. There will be a derivative
"Level 2" logo for systems and upgrade kits. Titles will continue to
use the original logo, as "Level 1" systems and upgrade kits will,
and the title's packaging will specify any level 2 capabilities needed.
The MPC Council is now developing test suites and related stuff to
ensure compliance with their specs. The companies will have to test
their stuff for compliance and this will be verified by the council.
Thus, the old "logo" becomes a "seal of approval" or certification.
That should make consumers feel even more comfortable than before and
i should think might encourage a lot of the present "unofficial MPC"
products to now consider avtually paying for "official" status since
they would now be getting more for their money?
