David, Yes, when you need to maintain permanent archives that large, then the tape is helpful. It is most useful when you don't really need to use the backups frequently and to do permanent archives. But floppies or some other method is faster if you need to frequently restore individual files from the backups, at least that's been my experience, rather than doing it from the tapes. I admire your tempting fate for so long!!! Invariably, I get comfortable when the system works well for a while and tend to ignore doing daily or weekly backups. But I always end up paying the penalty for being lax!! Last time I got careless it took me an entire day to restore things. Experience is a tough taskmaster.
