"Good machine under it". I don't buy that one. A good OS over it is what's important. Sure, throw enough hardware at it (speed) and the problems will be masked. Any OS / App can look good. Most of the critical apps as you call them are handled by embedded systems and controllers anyway with specialized R/T kernels. Although RISC cpu's are "faster", people are over looking that a CISC cpu takes less CODE than a RISC cpu with software doing the missing instructions.
