chaos software reference
Lynn:
I see that you've received some great suggestions. I downloaded the Fractint
files as well. They have far more in them than I could give you. Ignore the
separate documentation files – they relate to version 15 while the fractint.zip
archive is up to 18.2 and contains newer, much better documentation. Follow the
directions in fractint.doc or just use the online material.
Some other references you might find useful:
"Fractals Everywhere", by Michael Barnsley
Academic Press, Inc., 1988
"Chaos and Fractals: The Mathematics behind the Computer Graphics", Proceedings
of Symposia in Applied Mathematics, Vol 39
American Mathematical Society, 1989
"The Fractal Geometry of Nature", by Benoit B. Mandelbrot
W.H. Freeman and Co., 1983
You may be able to find these in a good library or bookstore. Failing that,
they are available (among others) from the Library of Science, a Newbridge Book
Club (3000 Cindel Dr., Delran, NJ, 08075-9908). The May 1994 Scientific
American has an ad for them where the inroductory offer is coincidentally for
three books on chaos.
If you have access to old Scientific American's, A.K. Dewdney described home
computer routines for generating fractals in his column "Computer Recreations"
in Aug., 1985.
Good luck,
JW
