As insidious as alcohol ads (and others, too) are, I find them unbelieveably fascinating, and have made a game of it to try and spot the subtle and blatant subliminal stuff in them. I used to have quite a collection of print ads, with all sorts of cool stuff airbrushed in. I even had an orange juice ad that had, airbrushed into the reflections, shadows, and light of the glass of orange juice, the face of a monkey staring back at you. And O.J. Simpson was holding up a glass of the stuff. It seemed to be aimed at black people, and the monkey thing, well… if I was black I'd have been pretty offended. But there are a lot more subtle ads than that, and it's definitely a challenge to try and find the subliminal hooks. John Tissavary (LUNA cie)
