It's not that they fix non-critical things, it's that you can live without the fix 🙂 The answer is very technical. If you're a technical type, Haynie could explain it to you better than I. If your not, this baby-talk explanation should do. The 040 daughter card basically has to convert 040-talk to 030-talk, since the A4k motherboard talks 030-talk. The PALs are a big part of this. With the first production release, there were several little timing glitches and potential extra delays, to the point that the 4091 didn't really work. The 3.1 board fixed most of them. An additional bug was found that, when fixed, can give the CPU a little more time, enough that there is measurably more CPU available during disk access and that serial interupts are less of a problem (those with Fastlanes or 4091s downloading 14.4 to a SCSI drive have probably noticed increased file transfer errors). — Dale L.
