I just got finished Demoing the two sanyo's with the EDIT-SAN TAO product. I know that they have a good reputation but I just couldn't get the performance that I needed. It was very slow to cue up the decks for each edit… You MUST use TimeCode if you want to get accurate at all… ( and that is difficult if your camera records on channel 2 audio, where you would have stiped the TC earlier…Also a pain) . And lastly… If you want to get down and dirty and just edit from one deck to the other without the TAO… just "crash editing" forget it! The sanyo pre-rolls no matter what, on both decks making accuracy a no-go. Also there is NO communication between the two decks without the TAO system.. In all, the decks are very good for single frame animation but don't have what it takes as far as editing capabilities… My production manager spent some time with the demo set up at my request and left in frustration. He said that IF you had all Time Coded raw footage, and set up the EDL for each cut, then left the machine overnight to do the edits by itself, it would be just fine. But, he said, who really does that? Having said that… I just saw that Sanyo has seen the error of their ways in not providing easy, simple, CTRL- track (fairly) accurate editing, between decks with out a controller… Their answer is the Sanyo GVR-S955. It addresses these problems, directly, and I think it will be a real winner… Jim Garner (Zeddock)
