My first thought, Andy, is to seperate all the sides of the letter, and use
planar mapping coordinates to map each side seperately, making sure the scale
of the letter's sides correspond with the size of the checkers in the map.
You'll have to position the map correctly to keep the pattern properly
"checkered". <g>
