#Banding
I have a problem with linotronic postscript output of gradient fills. It is
terribly banded. The gradient fill was created in TV paint, cycling from black
to white with antialiasing on, saved as a 24 bit IFF, loaded into ADpro and
resaved as an 8 bit IFF, imported into Propage 4.1 and downloaded to a high
resolution imagesetter at 150 lpi at high resolution (2540 dpi). Artie Shaw…
BIG bands! Then the original IFF was recalled into ADpro where it was subjected
to three different dithering routines: Floyd, Burke and Sierra. After being
rendered, each was saved as a 256 color (rendered data) version. All four
versions, including the original IFF, were imported onto a single page in
Propage, positioned side by each, and again output on a high res unit, this
time at 133 lpi at high res (2540)…our vendor suggested the 133 lpi. Glenn
Miller time again. And the interesting part is that there appears to be no
discernible difference between any of the images. They all suck equally. I am
open to suggestions. In fact, I'm desperate for suggestions. Any ideas as to
how to get rid of the banding, or drastically minimize it, would be greatly
appreciated.
