IBM's shipped over 4 million copies, but it's widely known that recipients of
PCs from IBM formatted the drive as soon as they got the machine and installed
Windows. I think that changed around a year ago. It was a funny story, in
that IBM suddenly gets completely pragmatic about their business, and started
shipping PCs with DOS/Windows installed. Apparently, it was around that same
time that demand for OS/2 increased, because they had to go back in and rip out
DOS/Windows and reinstall OS/2. On the other hand, this could have just been a
story to explain why their machines were so backed up in shipping (I waited 10
months before my Thinkpad finally arrived!)
Also, I work at Microsoft, so my numbers on OS/2 may be off a little. 🙂
