just to follow up. i had been having an ongoing problem with 3d studio crashing while rendering. I received an abnormal program termination message and a memory protection fault. i spoke of this a few times and with the help of many on this forum, i tried just about every trick in the book before finaly giving up and replacing the 50 mhz system with a 100 mhz dx4 system. After swapping all of the components from the 50 mhz to the 100 mhz computer i was dismayed to find that the problem not only persisted but got worse. in the new system, i was not limited to crashing only when rendering, but also when saving files ( a very painful experience). because the problem was so much worse (no longer intermitent) it was relatively easy to detect the real cuprit. The 32 megabytes of ram were overheating (the new system was a mini-tower with the ram mounted adjacent to the power supply) i removed the system cover and have run for nearly a week without a crash. i intend to replace the system cover as soon as i can find a way to ensure better air flow over the ram chips. I just wanted to thank all of those who offered help.
