Data Translation's Media 100 system also uses a variable compression scheme. HOWEVER, 1) it is Mac based. 2) a typical system which still, in my opinion, is not as good as a Toaster/Flyer setup costs $20,000 without the computer 3) the cheapest setup is $12,000 without the computer. 4) the demo video they have shows the capabilities of the system and it is impressive. The image quality is excellent. I could tell no artifacting at all. They claimed it was BetaSP quality. I can only imagine what the Flyers D2 will be like! There is also another company (Cineware?) that has a PC based system. The image quality looks like 2nd generation SVHS and it costs almost as much as a Flyer. In light of such pricing, I think we all owe a lot of gratitude to Newtek for making this technology profusely affordable for all video enthusiasts.
