PM >>He has a A1200 and wants to know what type of drives he can use, SCSI
or IDE and does anyone have any suggestions of a good inexpensive drive to
purchase?<<
The A1200 has a built-in interface, and mounting bracket for a 2.5" IDE
drive — the ones often used in IBM/Clone laptops.
He will need to locate the HardDrive prep software for the Amiga, the 2.5"
IDE cable for connecting the HD to the Amiga's interface, and the screws
for attaching the HD to the mounting bracket.
Commodore makes a kit that contains the needed parts & software to upgrade
the A1200 with an approved IDE HD, although you can find third party HD
packages for the A1200. Commodore, also has an additional documention
package for the A1200.
The packages are:
HARD DRIVE UPGRADE KIT:
Contains documentation and other items for upgrading A600 and A1200
computers with an approved 2.5-inch IDE hard drive.
AS217 Documentation Pack:
Contains the AMIGADOS USER'S GUIDE, and the AREXX USER'S GUIDE, applicable
to Release 2.1 and 3.0, of the Amiga system software.

Getting an IDE drive for the A1200 can cause some hassle, since the
Amiga's IDE implimentation requires the READ MULTIPLE, and WRITE
MULTIPLE commands. These commands involve operations preformed across
interrupts.
Normally, IBMs don't worry about doing this. A program for the IBM
called "Rocket Launcher", increases IDE drive speed by using these
features. If the IDE is "capatible" with this program, then it PROBABLY
is compatible with the A1200.
Here are two slightly dated lists of compatible 2.5" IDE drives:

Notes
=====
1) In the March 1993 issue of "Amiga Shopper" the CP2034, CP2064, CP2084
and Go! 4080, are explicitly listed as working in the A600 and not the
A1200. [The list poster] received mail from 2 users, one saying they got
the CP2064 working, and the other saying they got the CP2084 working.
2) The Conner CP2067 only works after power-on, and not after a warm
reboot.
3) Someone in "comp.sys.amiga.hw" said that the GoDrive will work *if*
it's recent enough; (firmware rev. 7F or later). No confirmation on this
though.
