Andrew,
Glad you enjoyed my ramblings! I have no complaints with GVP and the
software upgrade path they have offered for the IV24. GVP provided a
rather substantial upgrade for the early IV24s which not only included
much better software (and more of it!) but also new ROMs for the board. I
had to pay around $100 for it because I always seem to buy early (so I can
pay the highest price and do free trouble shooting for companies — well
at least it seems that way <G>), but I would expect all IV24s shipping
now-a-days to be already equiped with this upgrade.
I got wind of some "rumors" a little while back that indicated GVP was
considering an EGS library for the IV24. One of the factors against doing
one was that it could not perform anywhere near the performance of their
Spectrum product. It seems the IV24 does not have any graphics
accelerators on board and therefore your machine's CPU has to do all the
work. In fact, I asked GVP about the IV24 EGS just last week and received
the all to familiar "we do not confirm or deny the existence of
aliens/nuclear weapons/(your favorite unknown)" response — boy do I hate
that.
