MKBmap troubles

I've just run MKBMAP using the Avalon PostScript Type1 font … the Avalon
file was in my current directory, the MKBMAP program was in my command path
and I used the command line:
MKBMAP -n FONTS:Avalon/* Avalon 12
^ ^ ^ ^ these are the spaces you need. and it
worked just fine.
Can you perhaps relate the exact error message you're getting (and if
possible give some idea of when it's appearing … although I appreciate
that may be difficult)? Also, does it happen whatever font you try to use?
