Purely speculation on my part, but I suspect that Chuck Peddle (the
designer of the first Commodore computer) conjured up the word PET as
a follow-on to such items as "pet rocks" that were going around. The
idea, I imagine, was to create an image of a computer as a friendly
companion, as opposed to the general image of computers then as
large, impersonal beasts.
Again speculating, I think that Personal Electronic Transactor was
thought up later as an explanation of the acronym PET.
