If someone wants to do an improved STARS (the latest is STARS3 which does what STARS2 does plus is compatible with 48-bit color space and 16-bit Alpha with gamma as introduced in r3, plus allows random starfields of user-definable number of stars without having to run STARMAKE), here's an idea: how about TWINKLING stars? Just do a fractalized random shift in hue, saturation, and brightness for the generated stars over time! User-selectable, so outer-space scenes don't have twinkling stars, while scenes set outdoors at night would have them!
