Yes I did understand that that was your understanding, which is why I addressed
John specifically. I just didn't want there to be any confusion.
The fact is MS does provide a solution for your "problem", though in practice I
would not recommend the configuration you've been using anyway. I think any
more than 2 500 Mb IDE's warrants a SCSI solution and that is how my systems
are configured. I use them only for software and image files, rendered frames
all go out to contiguous large format SCSI. I think this is fairly common. But
however you're doing it, it works for you. Actually my approach was suggested
when R3 came out with its advanced networking capability, and it does work very
well.

Yes that's what I discovered. And I think we've done the AMMEDIA community a
service by identifying this as a potential problem. However, I don't think its
as much a question of NT, as a question of staying up with current technology.
Be that as it may, there are four months within which to get situated and if
anyone thought they were going to go for more than 18 months without upgrading,
I've got news for them. The industry cycle is 18 months. I personally work on a
12 month cycle with adjustments, and that's what I base my projections on. Its
worked quite well so far. The important thing is not to be buying at the head
but about 3 or 4 months behind which sort of does work into the 18 month cycle.
If R5 had come out on the 18 month cycle, everyone would have been knee deep in
the hoopla… so in spite of some protests to the contrary, we can consider
ourselves fortuneate, that a) they mentioned the OS migration and b) that there
is ample to time to faciliate it. Anyone who bought a new system with the
release of R4, provided they'd bought a healthy amount of RAM to begin with,
would still be in good shape by the time R5 comes out, and I think expecting
anymore than that is very unrealistic. Another way to guage your purchasing
decisions.
And I am certainly not taking issue with your raising these points, if anything
suggests that, I'd like to see it. As I said I think you and I are doing the
forum a service. FWIW.
