The printer can't select manual feed unless it receives the command to do so.
If you do a printer self-test, from where is the paper selected? What if you
print something from DOS, like COPY DIR >PRN (which will send a copy copy of
the directory to the printer). If these are pulled from the cassette, then the
manual feed request must be coming from the app.
