Allan, How are you generating the grey scale patterns? In PCL mode, the printer is only capable of generating 8 different grey patterns to fill arbitrary rectangles. With the newer 600 dpi printers, these patterns are the same as those originally generated with the first LaserJets for backwards compatibility. These are, indeed, quite coarse. Unlike PostScript, the printer cannot and does not generate grey fills of arbitrary percentage within an arbitrary area. The bit-mapped fill patterns must be generated by the printer driver, the application, or by the programmer writing PCL code directly.
