Hi David, I understand what you mean, it is funny, I would go out and spend money on a scanner even if is just for personal fun. I once had the experience of buying something really bad, (stereo amp for my car), the money I paid wasn't much, and the amp sucked big time, I was fortunate enough to take it back, and bought a top of the line Denon amp at 1500$, I love music, and this sounds amazing. The thing is that you get what you pay for… I'm now very weiry of buying an article that is half the price of other article that is supposed to do the same thing. I see some scanners at 899$, then some at 1499$, but again you get what you pay for. It is all a matter of money though. Yeah, with times today, nobody feels very secure here anymore, in Canada anyway, they say the employment situation is getting better here, but most people don't see it happening, so everyone is watching their pennies more closely. For scanners, there is now a new model that takes over where the IIIc left off, the HP ScanJet 3c, this is a beautiful piece of machinery, if you ever see it, you won't want to go home without it!, oh well, c'est la vie, take care, Mark in Mtl.
