Erich-
I know green has a particular meaning, but I don't remember what it is. You
will need at least one SIMM, though, and it's theoretically possible that the
ZIPs are causing the problem, though I did boot and run some with ZIPs…
although I did always have at least one SIMM on the board. You can turn your
ZIPs around pretty well though, since they're aren't manufactured much anymore.
I got $160 for my 4MB if ZIPs. Offer them for $160 for each 4MB or $300 for
the whole 8MB, and if you don't actually get those prices, you should get
something close.
I have heard of people with 4040s running them without any SIMMs, but then the
whole memory scheme is different on 4000s. What country are you in? I can
only speak for the USA office of Macrosystem, which is answering the phones MWF
9am-5pm EST. If you keep calling and calling there, you'll eventually get
through.
As to my config: desktop A3000, WE3040 with 16MB SIMM, 2MB CHIP, no ZIPs, and
some other cards. Oh, and OS3.1.
One thing to try is to make sure that all the socketed chips are seated firmly.
