PMFJI. The A1000 had 512k of RAM, and 1/2 of that was for the writable control
store (WCS) that held the Kickstart information in it. If was desgned to be
protected so that when you rebooted, Kickstart was still in RAM. Kickstart 2.x
is a double sized ROM (512k) compared to 1.x and the WCS can only accomodate
256k for Kickstart. In that respect, you couldn't use a 2.x OS on a stock
Amiga 1000.
Kwikstart II does the job, letting you switch between ROMS. ZKick et al set
aside an area of RAM to store the Kickstart 2.x image so you could use it on an
A1000 or others of the family without having to upgrade the ROM chip.
