"NT 3.1 got a lot of bad press because it deserved it. Then Micros**t hired Dave Cutler to head the NT project team." I thought Dave Cutler was in from the beginning. (before 3.1) "Cutler pushed the development team to shrink the code, speed it up, and make it more robust. Amazingly, for a MS OS product, they succeeded." It is fairly robust, but it still lacks speed. "The biggest remaining problem is picky installation." Not to mention it has a big problem with device driver availability and with NT you HAVE to have the right driver. "But once installed, it is fast, robust, nearly uncrashable, and resource requirement are not unrealistic by today's standards." It's true its "nearly" uncrashable. The only crashes we had when we had an NT machine were network software. Still it's just not fast enough to make of for its robustness. While the resource requirements aren't unrealistic for some individuals and shops, it is totally unrealistics for 90% of our installed PC's. Most don't have enough CPU and RAM. I can run it at home, but I don't. "My company is buying RAM for $45/MB and hard drives for 40 cents/MB." That doesn't count CPU power, and do you know how much, even at these prices, it would cost for us to upgrade all our PC's… Now realistically, we couldn't run OS/2 on all of our PC's either, but there is a significantly higher percentage that will run it.
