Fields ON will always look strange when looked at individually. You can get
a pretty good look at them by either:
1) view them with a program like TIPS which has a field copy routine, or
2) capture them in a TBC or such which can capture in field mode.
This will lower the resolution, of course, but hardly noticeable if what you
want is a quick view to make sure all is going well.
Now you see why a network is so good to have when rendering! Write the
files out to the net and view them from another machine without stopping the
rendering!
