How do I get the caustic lighting to act like the squiggles on the ground? I
would think that you make a transparent (filtered) surface and project lights
through it? Or does the caustic lighting provide for this so that the surface
of the water is not needed?
<<
The transparent surface is not needed to create the effect. Of course, if you
want to view the surface of the water in the image you'll need to add it. <g>
Add the Caustics.itx to a lone axis in the detail editor. Make this axis a
LIGHT object. You may want to make this light object rectangular shaped
depending on what else will be in view in your image. Of course you can tailor
it once you get the overall look. Just be sure to make the SIZE ADJUST a very
small number. The default setting is just WAY TOO BIG to notice the caustics
patterns. A setting of 0.1 or less is a good starting point for fine tuning.

P.S. You can use a filtered plane with a color texture applied to it, and have
a light shine through it also. This is another way to create "caustic"
effects. The CRUMPLED.ITX makes some nice caustic type patterns.
