Because the C cross compiler (for which we had paid about $7500)
couldn't handle certain syntax errors and crashed when it encountered them.
The point is that I don't think my co-workers would be real happy if I
inadvertantly tried to compile such a program while they were in the middle
of an editing session and they lost all their work as a result. For that
matter, even if I were debugging my own code and got a fatal error, there's
no reason that should have any impact on them; isn't that what a multi-user
(although not neccessarily multi-tasking) system is all about :-). (I
agree with your original statement that for a dedicated, embedded
<redundant!> system, there's usually no difference between a task crash and
a system crash.)
