John:
Is that really the case that Nobody pays for shareware? Gee, I used to own
a CP/M based computer, and back then there wasn't any such thing as
Shareware, we used to lcall the stuff distributed on the boards Public
Domain, and source was usually the way things were distributed back then!
As I recall, you have quite a few programs out there that are making you
money, why not donate one program to either the PD, or Shareware markets as
a show of good faith (look at all the advertising ASDG got from VD0 !),
you've already stated that you don't want to sell it, and GD wasn't
interested either. You also didn't think that many people would buy it, so
if you wouldn't have made many sales, releasing it as shareware wouldn't
loose many sales either!
I'm in the Heavy Leather Sewing Machine business, and I rent out machines
for about $45.00/month. Many of my customers make custom saddles that sell
for anywhere from $2500.00 – $7500.00 on the machine, and then some make
gun holsters that sell for $10.00, and 1 customer even makes hammer holders
that sell for $4.95. Should I charge them all the same amount? Should it
bother me that somebody's using my machine at only $45.00/month, but making
4-5K/month with it? I'm sorry, I just don't see where it makes any
difference what's being done with a product.
John, perhaps I'm not making any sense, and that's quite possible, I do
have that problem once in a while, so if that's the case, I'm sorry, it's
just that I'm an opinionated SOB that sort of like to argue, specially when
I think I'm right (all of the time!) <grin>.
