David, The main reason was price. Recording time was an issue…but really only a minor issue. A friend and I bought machines at about the same time (back in the 70's). I got a beta unit, he got a VHS. We both had equal recording time, I had a better picture (much better…the VHS picture wasn't even close). Mine cost $1,000 his cost $700 to $800. About 4 years ago…I replaced my equipment. I bought a good Beta unit and a good VHS unit. They are about equivalent in features, but even then, the Beta unit was about $350 and the VHS about $250. Again, the Beta is clearly the better machine. Even at Beta III speed, the picture is clearly better than the VHS's best speed (SP). Price is normally a major factor in general consumer buying, and this case is no exception. Don
