You're on the right track. Each "note" does have a specific frequency, if
it's played on the "instrument" of a pure sine wave. Real-world
instruments rarely have that pure 'S' shape. Instead, their waveforms are
very, very complicated. One way to think of them is the sum of a large
number of sine waves of different frequencies, frequencies that change in
amplitude and frequency over time. You might want to check the library for
books on electronic music synthesis. They often include a deeper
discussion of these issues, as well as a few charts and graphs and example
waveforms.
Another more interesting way to tackle this problem is to use an Amiga
sound sampler and sound waveform editing software. There are several
packages available at varying prices. With this, you could sample the sound
of the instruments you'd like to approximate, then examine what they look
like in the waveform editor. It might be a lot easier for you to load
sampled sounds and play them in sequence, than typing in DATA statements
for sound approximations. I know it's possible to load and play sampled
sounds from within AmigaBASIC; once upon a time I wrote a library for the
FutureSound digitizer that let you play sounds from within AmigaBASIC. It
might still be in the library here.
