At my job I have inherited a couple of Sony CD-ROMs (both are model number CDU 6100-11) dating from 1989. These drives came with a driver called STDFMAN (Standard File Manager V 2.25 – Reference Technology 1986-91), and nothing else – least of all any documentation. We use the CDs exclusively with a DOS based geographic information database called Conquest. One other point is that we have a Novell 3.11 network which the stations to which the CDs are attached use primarily for printing (they have to be attached to the network while using the CDROM in order to print). I have not tried to establish any network access to the CDROM drives as yet. The drives worked reasonably well under DOS 5.0, but now that we're changing over to DOS 6.0, I've noticed a few unusual quirks. The most serious of these is a tendency to reboot the entire machine when trying to exit certain file management functions. The CD drives also have developed a habit of hanging when the program tries to access one particular set of program files stored on the CD. The only change other than changing DOS versions that I've made to the systems is that I am using the updated Netware shell (V3.26 if I remember correctly) that was released to work with DOS 6.0 (I did update the setver table to get the new shell to work properly and I've also updated it so that STDFMAN operates under DOS 5.0). However, I'm not sure if the problems we've been having are related to DOS 6.0, to the new NETX.EXE, or to the Conquest software itself. I should also note that I don't have a lot of experience with either SCSI devices or network management. My question is this – has anyone had any experience working with these drives and DOS 6.0 while attached to a network? If so, is there an updated driver anywhere out there that might solve these problems?
