Dennis, In general I agree with your comments. The one statement that caught my attention was the "3D widget". To quote one famous and one well known educator. The famous quote is from Ralph Tyler, " use only real problems", and the well known is Wayne somebody, " don't use mutilated blocks as exercises". To expand on that, I think our role is presenting concepts and allowing the students to formulate the content ie bring to class a series of symbols or components from your engineering discipline.
